Winners of the CrossFit Open 2020

The Open are done (again) and here are the winners. Congratulations to

  • Patrick Vellner
  • Ragnheiður Sara Sigmundsdottir

Score is still unofficial, because we might see some more penalties. But the 2 top spots aren’t likely to change anymore.

CrossFit Open 20.5

Now this is something new: a completely new type of workout, and I think everyone stresses out a bit about this one. Depending on your level, this workout will look completely different to the person working out next to you. Here we go:

For time, partitioned any way:
40 muscle-ups
80-cal. row
120 wall-ball shots, 20-lb. ball to 10 ft.

Time cap: 20 min.

You can mix and match the movements however you want. It’s probably a bad idea to do everything unbroken in one big set, and it’s also not smart to do 40 rounds of 1 muscle up, 2 calories on the rower and 3 wall ball shots…

However you want to do this, have fun while planning your strategy.

If you spot a mistake or if you feel like one of the points need more clarification, make sure to get in contact.

CrossFit Open 20.4

30 box jumps, 24 in.
10 clean and jerks, 185 lb.
30 single-leg squats
10 clean and jerks, 225 lb.
30 single-leg squats
5 clean and jerks, 275 lb.
30 single-leg squats
5 clean and jerks, 315 lb.

Time cap: 20 minutes

If you spot a mistake or if you feel like one of the points need more clarification, make sure to get in contact.

CrossFit HQ announced lots of penalties for the top 40 athletes in the Open

HQ recently announced a bunch of penalties for a lot of the top athletes. The list includes the following well-known names:

  • Samantha Briggs – lack of extension during the ground-to-overheads and single-foot jumps during the burpees
  • Cédric Lapointe  – lack of extension during the ground-to-overheads
  • Frederik Aegidius  – single-foot jumps during the burpees
  • Aaron Rabin – lack of extension during the ground-to-overheads
  • Dane Smith – single-foot jumps during the burpees
  • Luka Vunjak  – single-foot jumps during the burpees
  • Lazar Dukic  – lack of extension during the ground-to-overheads

You can read the official announcement here. The most common reason is “single-foot jumps” over the bar or “lack of extension” during the ground-to-overhead. A lot of the athletes also received a penalty for a “false start”, because the workout description states:

This workout begins with the barbell on the floor and the athlete standing tall. After the call of “3, 2, 1 … go,” the athlete may pick up the barbell and  perform 8 ground-to-overheads then 10 bar-facing burpees for 10 rounds.

from the Workout Description

There is a lot of noise about the burpee standard, the revived HSPU standard of the last couple workouts. The most recent penalties are only for 20.1, which is already 3 weeks behind us. HQ does seem to have a hard time to catch up on time, so expect more penalties coming in after video reviews of 20.3 are done…

15 deadlifts, 315 lb.

CrossFit Open 20.2

Complete as many rounds as possible in 20 minutes of:

  • 4 dumbbell thrusters (50lbs / 35lbs)
  • 6 toes-to-bars
  • 24 double-unders

Make sure to read the official workout description and the movement standards before you start.

In 20 minutes, that’s a lot of double unders and also a lot of toes-to-bars. Beyond The Whiteboard says that the average score on this workout is between 13 to 15 rounds. The elite athletes will push 28 rounds though.

After last weeks workout, this looks like another chance to consider your life choices leading up to this. 20min will feel very long. To help you out, here are some tips and tricks from Dan Bailey:

CrossFit Open 20.1

As of today, the first Open workout of the 2020 season is done. Every one of us did it, and I bet everyone hated it. It is a simple workout, but very effective in showing the limits of your fitness. At latest after 5 minutes everyone knew what type of workout this is. 😁 So, here’s just a quick reminder:

For time: 10 rounds of

8 ground-to-overhead
10 bar-facing burpees.

Time cap is 15min.

That’s it. So simple, so much pain. Check the official description at games.crossfit.com.

For the men, the top 3 positions are Lefteris Theofanidis with a time of 8:05, Cédric Lapointe with a time of 8:16 and Björgvin Karl Guðmundsson with a time of 8:16.

For the women, the top 3 positions are Emma McQuaid with the only sub-8 min time at 7:41, followed by Samantha Briggs with a time of 8:01 and Ragnheiður Sara Sigmundsdottir with a time of 8:11.

As usual, we have some unfamiliar names in the top 20 on both the men and women leaderboard, but over the next 4 weeks I expect a lot of familiar names creep up in the top ranks.
