Greg Glassman Retires

Now that is news that maybe nobody really expected: CrossFit CEO Greg Glassman retires and Dave Castro is taking on the role as CEO.

I’m stepping down as CEO of CrossFit, Inc., and I have decided to retire. On Saturday I created a rift in the CrossFit community and unintentionally hurt many of its members. Since I founded CrossFit 20 years ago, it has become the world’s largest network of gyms. All are aligned in offering an elegant solution to the vexing problem of chronic disease. Creating CrossFit and supporting its affiliates and legions of professional trainers has been a labor of love.

Another controversial statement of CrossFit CEO

A few days ago it was time again for a controversial statement of CrossFit CEO Greg Glassman:

In the usual convoluted way, there is an update post from the official CrossFit account:

A lot of athletes spoke out against this kind of behavior, like Tia-Clair Toomey, Rich Froning, Noah Ohlsen, Katrín Tanja Davíðsdóttir for example:

I wanted to start by saying that I am incredibly saddened, disappointed and frustrated with the actions and words of Crossfit HQ and in particular Greg Glassman. I’m deeply apologetic from the bottom of my heart to all the people who have had to witness this ignorance and the pain it causes. A lack of acknowledgement and empathy for those who are fighting for basic human rights and equality is simply inexcusable and it’s behaviour that we cannot stand for. It has made both Shane and I incredibly ashamed to be a part of an organisation that we have dedicated so much of ourselves to. If it has us angered and disappointed like we are, we couldn’t even begin to imagine how these words and actions affect the extremely diverse global community of crossfitters and supporters who have all dedicated so much time, money and passion to the sport. But this is much bigger than the sport. For those who continue to be dismissive of inequality, you must understand that this is a truly GLOBAL issue and we NO longer can sit idle and do or say nothing. It’s on ALL of us to keep fighting the cause globally until systemic racism and the inhumane treatment of black communities around the globe no longer exists. I said earlier that this issue is much bigger than sport, yet sport and the functional fitness space has a really important part to play. Sport and fitness bring us together and unite us in such a powerful and profound way. I want my platform to drive positivity, unity and the overall message that no matter your skin colour or cultural background, we should all inspire one another to be the best versions of themselves. I want my platform to reflect the values and beliefs of the community I feel most comfortable in, a community that raises up those around them and gives everybody their own individual opportunity to be a champion. My future with Crossfit is unclear and depends on the direction of HQ. I will continue to stand against ignorance and stand alongside those who fight abuse, hatred and racism.

Updates about CrossFit Games 2020 invitees

Recently there were a couple of updates about the 2020 CrossFit Games via the official instagram account. Here is a summary of the latest announcements:

  • The top 20 men and 20 women of the Open worldwide will receive invites to Aromas
  • The ten Sanctionals that were able to host in-person competitions this season will be invited to send their champions to this year’s CrossFit Games. […] If a Sanctionals champion has already qualified through the Open, the invite passes to the next athlete.
  • There will not be a team competition at the 2020 Reebok CrossFit Games.
  • In light of current constraints, it will not be possible to host the previously invited 239 national champions in Aromas. The national champion race will reset in 2021.

Do you think these are necessary changes? Do you like it?

On April 16, we announced that we are reviewing all options to host the CrossFit Games in Aromas while monitoring events globally. That effort is ongoing. Due to current limitations on social gatherings, and professional sport in particular, the field of athletes in attendance will be reduced. The Open Since the inception of the CrossFit Open, the top 20 athletes on the Open leaderboard have always included the future CrossFit Games champion among their ranks, and the Open winner has gone on to become the Games winner eight times. The top 20 men and 20 women worldwide will receive invites to Aromas. If an athlete declines their invite, the invite passes to the next athlete. Sanctionals The ten Sanctionals that were able to host in-person competitions this season will be invited to send their champions to this year’s CrossFit Games. Sanctionals invites are affected by placement in the Open. If a Sanctionals champion has already qualified through the Open, the invite passes to the next athlete. This process will hold true for this reduced field. For this reason, some invites that were extended before the government lockdowns may pass back to the original invitee. Beginning today, all previously invited individuals will be contacted with an update on the status of their invite. There will not be a team competition at the 2020 Reebok CrossFit Games. National Champions Last year, CrossFit Headquarters expanded the field of athletes in attendance at the Games to include the fittest athlete in every eligible country. In light of current constraints, it will not be possible to host the previously invited 239 national champions in Aromas. The national champion race will reset in 2021 with invites extended to champions who earn top placement in the upcoming CrossFit Open. 2021 Season The changes above have been made in consideration of the current challenges globally. The CrossFit Games will reset for the 2021 season with the intent of returning to crowning national champions and including teams, age group athletes, and a deep field of individuals competing for the title of Fittest on Earth in Madison, Wisconsin. #CrossFitGames @crossfitranch

The conclusion of the 2020 Age Group Online Qualifier marks the end of the 2020 season for age group athletes. Below is a brief recap. The Qualifier The 2020 Age Group Online Qualifier (AGOQ) took place March 12-16. During that time, lockdowns and restrictions began to interfere with some athletes' ability to participate in the event. At that time, the plan was to run the Games as scheduled. There was an option to delay the competition. Ultimately, the decision was made to proceed with the competition in the interest of hosting age group athletes at the 2020 Reebok CrossFit Games in Madison. Following the conclusion of the AGOQ, a review was conducted comparing how many athletes submitted workouts for all events in 2019 versus 2020. The comparison is available on the Games site. Link in bio. While there was a slight decrease in score submissions this year, the emerging global situation made it clear that extending the score submission window or delaying the competition would not improve athletes’ ability to participate. Penalties The video review process for validating and assessing score submissions concluded yesterday, April 29. Details for each penalty assessed are available through the article in bio. With these penalties applied, scores and rankings have now been adjusted, and the Online Qualifier Leaderboard is complete. Congratulations to all participating athletes on your placements. Season Ends On April 16, it was announced that the 2020 Reebok CrossFit Games would not be held in Madison, and all options were being evaluated for a change in format in light of the current constraints. This year, there will not be an in-person competition to crown the fittest in the CrossFit Games Age Groups. Prize money will not be issued. The age group competition will resume when the season resets in 2021. — #CrossFitGames #CrossFit #CrossFitMasters #CrossFitTeens #Fitness Images captured by @melkzdeck

CrossFit Games going back to Ranch in Aromas

There is an update about this years CrossFit Games and it looks like the 2020 season will see an event, but it will be radically different then what we saw last year. There is an announcement on the official homepage:

We remain fully committed to planning a live competition with live media coverage. At this point, we are concentrating on a competition in Aromas, the original home of the CrossFit Games. […] The Games will not be a public event. Due to sweeping decisions to ban large festivals and sporting events for the foreseeable future, we are suspending the on-site spectator experience for this year.

The official instagram account @crossfitgames also has a post about the CrossFit Games going back to the place it all started: the Ranch in Aromas.

Tommy Marquez and Sean Woodland also speculate about the event format in episode 67 of the Talking Elite Podcast. Head over to your favorite podcast client and listen to the options coming from two people with lots of experience with live events and how CrossFit HQ operates.
