CrossFit shutters Facebook, Instagram accounts

Over at morningchalkup.com there is a good article about the most recent hickup with the online presence of CrossFit at Facebook and Instagram. Read the full article here.

Here’s what I consider the most important point:

All activity on CrossFit, Inc.’s Facebook and Instagram accounts is suspended as of May 24, 2019, as CrossFit investigates the circumstances pertaining to Facebook’s deletion of the Banting7DayMealPlan and other well-known public complaints about the social-media company that may adversely impact the security and privacy of our global CrossFit community.

The business practice of Facebook is not new and nobody should be surprised by sudden deletions of accounts, the overreaching data-sharing with partners and the evermore aggressive colleciton of data. Looks like a certain threshold was reached and Glassman decided in a spur of a moment to deactivate the official Instagram and Facebook accounts.

Armen Hammer has a video up too:

In a time where social media is a major way to build a brand, this is a strange move. But considering the history of CrossFit and how news about the company were shared in the past, this is not so suprising anymore. It still is surprising that a company and brand which builds on community can not get to a point where it’s transparent to affiliates (and all members of the community) what is happening next.

CrossFit Instagram page deleted

This morning something totally unexpected happened and the situation is not really clear to anyone. But, the CrossFit Instagram page is empty – or maybe deleted? You never know with Instagrams UI… Armen Hammer is stumped too:

He also made a quick video about all of this:

What do you think is happening? Is this a hacked account, strategy or a random action?

New interview with Greg Glassman by Armen Hammer

Armen Hammer published a new interview with the man himself, Greg Glassman. Make sure you don’t miss the video on youtube:

Here’s a short quote from the interview which sums up the motivation behind the shift to CrossFit and especially the Games and Media pretty good:

I did not want to broadcast the Games anymore. It took me two years to explain the difference between that and saying I don’t want the Games broadcasted. I want ’em broadcasted. I guess that would be nice. I think.

Do I wanna do it? Fuck no. Do I wanna stop anyone from do it. Fuck no, but I’m not doin it.

Greg Glassman, 16:52 in the video.
